What is the Communication Champion Programme (CCP)?

The CCP is for Early Years providers who are interested in learning more about Speech, Language and Communication to support all children in their care.

Early Years settings nominate a key person (or persons, depending on the size of the setting) to be an advocate for Speech, Language and Communication. They are known as the ‘Communication Champion’.

The CYP SLT service offers the nominated Communication Champion:

1.       An introductory video about SLCN

2.       On-going, termly workshops. These workshops cover different topics each term.

3.       A certificate and summary every time they attend the workshop.

The Communication Champion is encouraged to share this learning across the Early Years setting, in the most suitable way possible for the setting. Childminders who attend will be encouraged to share their learning when networking with other childminders (e.g. joint visits, childminder groups or childminder networking sessions).

This is additional training/support outside of the time allocated for children known to the Early Years CYP SLT service.

What current Communication Champions say about the programme:

“The Communication Champion workshops that the NHS speech and language team run have been incredibly valuable to attend as a preschool leader. The team are experienced in helping support children to develop their early language skills and they provide invaluable advice on how to progress children's language forwards. The workshops are also a great chance to have face to face time with the SALT team and to discuss any particular children in your setting that may need extra communication support.” (Current Communication Champion).

"As a loan childcare provider working as a childminder I have found the communication workshops really inspiring and supportive. I go away after every practical session with something new to pass on to others and use with the children and familes I care for. Having access to the SALT team, with their wealth of expertise in the form of training has been so helpful to me - they are able to advise and give useful feedback that really enhances my provision. I cannot recommend attending these friendly welcoming session enough." (Current Communication Champion)

"I think they're really useful and I really enjoy the workshops. I am able to reflect on my own work" - Stanley Green Infants Communication Champion.

"As a Communication Champion for a Poole school I found the workshops incredibly insightful and extremely practical in every way. Being fully informed in 'Blank questioning levels' and how to use them in shared reading and across other curriculum areas will support my planning as a class teacher but also in how I inform the practice of TAs and other support staff. in the future" - Jed, Communication Champion @ St.Joseph's.
